Best image sizes for social media
Every platform crops your photo to its own shape. If you upload the wrong size, heads get cut off and text gets blurred. Here are the sizes that work, in plain numbers.
- Square post: 1080 x 1080 pixels.
- Portrait post: 1080 x 1350 pixels.
- Story and Reel cover: 1080 x 1920 pixels.
- Profile picture: 320 x 320 pixels (shown as a circle, so keep faces away from the corners).
- Shared post image: 1200 x 630 pixels.
- Profile picture: 320 x 320 pixels, shown as a circle.
- Cover photo: 851 x 315 pixels on desktop, cropped taller on phones — keep important text in the centre.
YouTube
- Channel banner: 2560 x 1440 pixels, with the safe area in the middle 1546 x 423 pixels.
- Video thumbnail: 1280 x 720 pixels.
- Profile picture: 800 x 800 pixels, shown as a circle.
X (Twitter) and LinkedIn
- X post image: 1600 x 900 pixels.
- X profile picture: 400 x 400 pixels.
- LinkedIn post image: 1200 x 627 pixels.
- LinkedIn profile picture: 400 x 400 pixels; company page logo: 300 x 300 pixels.
How to resize a photo to fit
Use the social media resizer to crop a photo to a platform size, or the general image resizer for any exact pixel size. Start from the original photo, not from an already-compressed copy, and read how to compress images without losing quality before you upload, so the file stays small and sharp.
Three rules that save every post
- Upload at least the size listed above — smaller uploads get stretched and look soft.
- Keep faces and text away from the edges, because every platform crops a little.
- Save photos as JPG and graphics with text as PNG or WebP. See the format guide for why.
Platforms change their layouts from time to time, so if a size stops looking right, resize from your original photo again — never stretch an old upload. Your images never leave your device on ImageTool.us: every tool runs entirely in your browser. No upload, no signup, no watermark.
