How to send full-quality photos on WhatsApp
If you send a photo on WhatsApp the normal way, WhatsApp shrinks it before delivery. The receiver gets a smaller, softer copy — even if your original was sharp. Here is how to avoid that.
Send it as a document, not as a photo
- Open the chat and tap the attach button.
- Choose Document (not Gallery or Photos).
- Pick the photo file. WhatsApp then sends the original file unchanged.
The receiver must tap to download it, and it will not appear in their photo gallery automatically — but the quality stays full. That trade is worth it for prints, listings and client work.
If the file is too large to send
WhatsApp documents still have size limits, and a 10MB phone photo can be slow to send. Prepare it first, in your browser:
- Resize the photo to the size it will actually be viewed at — a 4000-pixel photo rarely needs to stay that large.
- Compress it, or use an exact target page such as 200KB or 400KB when a limit demands it.
- Keep the original safe, and send the prepared copy as a document.
Common mistakes
- Sending as a photo and expecting full quality — WhatsApp always compresses photo sends.
- Screenshotting a photo to send it — a screenshot is lower quality than the original file.
- Compressing twice — compress from the original once, as explained in how to compress without losing quality.
