Width: 80 characters — higher means more detail and a wider text file.

Honest note: rows are sampled wider apart than columns because text characters are taller than wide, so the art is an approximation, not a pixel-perfect copy. High-contrast photos with a clear subject work best — very detailed or dark photos turn into a muddy block of characters.

What ASCII art is good for

ASCII art turns a photo into a picture made only of keyboard characters. It is popular for forum signatures, chat messages, code comments, terminal art, and retro-style posters — anywhere a normal image file does not fit but plain text does.

Frequently asked questions

Is my image uploaded?

No. The art is made on your device, in your browser.

Why does the art look stretched or squashed?

Text characters are about twice as tall as they are wide, so the tool samples fewer rows than columns to keep the picture's proportions roughly right. It is an approximation — pick a clear, high-contrast photo for the best result.

What file do I download?

A plain .txt file with the art as text. You can paste it into any text field, message, or document.
