Square logos and icons work best

Output: one .ico file containing 16, 32, 48 and 256 px images.

Center crop only — a square is cut from the center of the image, then resized to each icon size. Nothing is stretched. Transparency is kept for PNG originals; a JPG photo has no transparency, so its icon background will be solid. If your photo is smaller than 256 px, it is enlarged to 256 px, which does not add detail.

How to make a .ico icon file

  1. Choose a photo or logo, or drag and drop it above.
  2. Click Generate .ico file. The result is a single favicon.ico file — tap Download below to save it.
  3. Use it as your website favicon or as a Windows app icon.

What is inside the .ico file?

The file contains four PNG images at 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixels, so Windows and browsers can pick the sharpest size for each use — a small browser tab, a desktop shortcut, or a large taskbar icon. PNG images inside an .ico file are the standard format used by modern Windows.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The .ico file is built on your device, in your browser.

Will my photo be stretched?

No. A square is cut from the center first, then resized — so a wide photo loses its left and right edges. If your subject is off-center, crop it to a square first.

How is this different from the Favicon Generator?

The Favicon Generator makes separate PNG files (16, 32, 48 and 180 px). This tool makes one .ico file with all four sizes inside, which is the format Windows expects for an icon file.
