Output: exactly 640 x 480 px, JPG.

Center crop for now — a 4:3 rectangle is cut from the center of the image, then resized to 640 x 480 px. Nothing is stretched. If your photo is smaller than 640 x 480 px, it is enlarged to 640 x 480 px, which does not add detail.

Why 640 x 480?

640 x 480 pixels is the classic VGA 4:3 size — the smallest standard 4:3 size, and the one many forums, email systems, and older screens still expect. It fits forum posts, small product listing images, and email attachments without cropping, and it keeps the file small enough to send or upload quickly while staying clear on a phone or laptop. Need the same shape a little bigger? Use our Resize to 800 x 600 tool. If your subject needs the 4:3 shape first, crop it with our Crop to 4:3 tool, or resize freely with the Resizer.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Resizing runs on your device, in your browser.

Will my photo be stretched?

No. A 4:3 rectangle is cut from the center first, then resized — so a square photo loses its top and bottom, and a very wide photo loses its left and right edges. If your subject is off-center, crop it to 4:3 first.

What if my photo is smaller than 640 x 480 px?

It is enlarged to 640 x 480 px. Enlarging does not add detail, so a very small original will still look soft — it just meets the size requirement.

What if my resized photo is still too large a file?

A 640 x 480 JPG from this tool is usually well under 150 KB, but a very detailed photo can be larger — in that case run the result through our Compressor or the Compress to 200KB page.
