How to crop an image to square for Instagram
A square photo is still the classic Instagram feed post: it fills the grid neatly, it looks the same on every phone, and it is easy to plan around. The size to aim for is 1080 x 1080 pixels — a 1:1 square. The steps below take any photo to that exact square in your browser on ImageTool.us, with no upload and no signup.
1. The size Instagram wants
- Feed square post: 1080 pixels wide by 1080 pixels tall (1:1).
- Shape: a perfect square — the width and height are equal.
- Format: JPG for photos, PNG if the image has transparency or sharp text and logos.
- Profile photo: Instagram shows it as a circle, so the square you upload gets its corners cut off — keep faces and text away from the corners.
- Stories and Reels are a different shape (tall and vertical), so do not use a square crop for those — this guide is for feed posts and profile photos only.
2. Step 1: crop your photo to a square
Most photos are not square, so the first job is to cut the photo to a square shape. A wide photo loses its left and right edges; a tall photo loses its top and bottom. Use the Crop Image to Square tool, which takes a center square crop at the photo's original resolution — nothing is stretched, and the output side equals the photo's shortest side. Before you crop, check where the main subject sits: a face, a product, or the key object should be near the center of the photo, because the center crop keeps the middle and trims the edges. If the subject is hard against one edge, that edge may be trimmed away, so pick a different photo or a wider framing first. The tool crops from the center only — there is no drag-to-select yet, so the center rule is the honest limit to plan around.
3. Step 2: resize to exactly 1080 x 1080
After the crop, the square may be larger than 1080 x 1080 — a phone photo often is — or smaller, if the original was a small image. Resize it with the Resize Image to 1080 x 1080 tool for an exact square at Instagram's recommended size. If your starting photo is already smaller than 1080 x 1080, resizing up will not add detail, so start from the largest original you have; a small, already-compressed copy will look soft at full size no matter how it is resized.
4. Step 3: check the circle crop for a profile photo
If the square is for a profile photo, remember that Instagram displays it as a circle. Anything near a corner — text, a second face, a logo — will be cut off in the circle view even though it looks fine in the square. Use the Circle Crop tool to preview the round result before uploading, and keep the face in the middle third of the square so hair and chin survive the circle. For a feed post, this step does not apply — the full square is shown.
5. Step 4: keep the file a sensible size
A 1080 x 1080 JPG is usually a reasonable file size for upload, but a very detailed photo saved as PNG can be much larger. If the file feels heavy, compress the finished square with the Image Compressor — a small quality reduction is invisible at feed size, and the upload is faster. For how far quality can drop before the loss shows, see the guide to compressing images without losing quality. Save the square as JPG for photos; only use PNG when you need transparency or perfectly sharp text.
Common mistakes
- Letting Instagram stretch or squeeze a wide or tall photo into a square — the photo comes out distorted.
- Cropping a face at the edge of the frame, so the square cut removes half the face.
- Putting text or a logo in a corner of a profile photo, where the circle crop cuts it off.
- Upscaling a tiny image to 1080 x 1080 and expecting it to look sharp — upscaling cannot restore detail that was never there.
- Re-saving the same JPG many times — each save loses a little quality, so work from the original and export the square once.
- Using a square crop for Stories or Reels, which need a tall vertical shape instead.
Quick checklist
- Cropped to a square, with the subject fully inside the frame and near the center.
- Resized to exactly 1080 x 1080 pixels for a feed post.
- For a profile photo: checked the circle crop, face in the middle third, nothing important in the corners.
- Saved as JPG for photos, PNG only for transparency or sharp text.
- Original photo kept untouched, so the square can be remade later.
