How to resize an image to 300x300

300 x 300 pixels is a square image: 1 unit wide for every 1 unit tall. It is the standard square thumbnail size — WordPress uses 300 x 300 for medium thumbnails, and online stores use it for small listing images — and it also works well for small profile pictures and forum avatars. The steps below resize any photo to exactly 300 x 300 in your browser on ImageTool.us, with no upload and no signup.

1. Step 1: pick a photo and keep the original

Start with the photo you want to resize — any common format works (JPG, PNG, or WebP). Keep a clean copy of the original before you begin: the tool cuts a square from the center of your photo and resizes it to 300 x 300, and the cut-off parts are not in the downloaded copy, so the only way to get the full photo back is to start over from the original. The original on your device is never changed; the tool only makes a new resized copy for you to download.

2. Step 2: open the tool and upload your photo

Open the Resize Image to 300 x 300 tool and upload your photo — click to choose it, or drag and drop it onto the page. The original appears in the preview on the left. Nothing is uploaded: the file stays on your device and the work happens in your browser.

3. Step 3: click Resize to 300 x 300

There are no settings to choose: the output is always exactly 300 x 300 px as a JPG. Click Resize to 300 x 300. The tool first cuts the largest square it can from the center of your photo — nothing is stretched — and then resizes that square to 300 x 300 px. The result appears next to your original so you can compare them before saving. If your photo is smaller than 300 x 300 px, it is enlarged to 300 x 300 px instead; enlarging does not add detail, so a very small original will still look soft — it just meets the size requirement.

4. Step 4: check the preview and save the result

Look at the edges before you download: on a wide photo, the crop cuts from the left and right, and on a tall photo, it cuts from the top and bottom. Make sure your subject is still fully in the frame and nothing important was cut off. When you are happy with it, tap Download below the result to save the new copy — it is called resized-300x300.jpg.

What 300x300 is

300 x 300 is a square image with a 1:1 ratio: the width and the height are the same. It is the size WordPress uses for medium thumbnails, because a photo at this size stays sharp in a small square preview without being an unnecessarily large file. It is also a common size for small store listing images, forum avatars, and small profile pictures, and it works well as a WhatsApp or Facebook profile picture. At 300 pixels on each side it is sharp enough for phone screens, and a JPG at this size is usually a small file that uploads fast. That is why it is a good default thumbnail size: big enough to look sharp, small enough to share easily.

When 300x300 is the right size

300 x 300 suits small square displays first of all: a thumbnail, a listing image, or a small profile picture. It is a good choice whenever the image will be shown small and square and you want it sharp without a large file. It is a poor choice for a social media post or a product photo that will be shown large: a 300 x 300 image shown at 1200 pixels wide will look soft, because the detail was never there. For a square post, use Resize to 1200x1200; for the standard avatar size, use Resize to 512x512. For the sizes each platform actually shows, see the Best Image Sizes for Social Media guide.

Keep the subject in the center

The tool crops from the center of the image, so the middle of your photo is what survives. Before you resize, check where your subject sits: if the person or object is in the middle, the crop will keep it. If the subject is off to one side — a person standing at the left edge of a wide photo, for example — the center crop may cut them off entirely. In that case, crop the photo in the Image Editor first, where you can choose which part to keep, and then run the result through the 300 x 300 tool. The same rule applies to very wide photos: a panoramic shot loses its left and right edges, so check that nothing important sits at the sides before you download.

Other resize sizes on ImageTool.us

300 x 300 is one of several exact sizes on the site, and the right one depends on where the image will be shown. Resize to 400x400 makes a slightly larger square version, for thumbnails that need a bit more detail. Resize to 512x512 makes the standard avatar size, for profile pictures on Discord, Slack, and Gravatar. Resize to 800x800 makes a larger square version, for profile pictures that will be shown bigger. Resize to 1024x1024 makes a square version a step up in size. Resize to 1080x1080 makes the square size for social media posts. Resize to 1080x1920 makes the tall vertical version, for Instagram Stories and phone wallpapers. If you need a square shape rather than exact pixels, Crop to Square cuts the same shape at your photo's original resolution. For any other size, the Image Resizer handles custom dimensions, and the Image Converter changes the file format afterward. For the sizes each platform actually shows, see the Best Image Sizes for Social Media guide.
